The Complete Manuscript to
A Model in Crisis

Complete Manuscript PDF - This is a very large PDF file, about 360 pages long. This will take a very long time to load if you have a slow connection. The current version is June 6, 2005. 13 out of 23 chapters are done.

This book will forever remain unfinished. It has been replaced by Process Is Everything.

The long chapter on Why Such Strong Adoption Resistance? is the highlight. It presents a computer simulation model that explains why adoption resistance is occurring.

Here are the simulation models ZIP in Vensim. For how to run them please see The World of Simulation at Thwink.org.

The zip file contains 11 models. Some of the models are strictly visually educational, and will not run. The main model for the chapter on Why Such Strong Resistance? is in the 8_NicheSuccession folder. The settings on it are for simulation run number 6. This is probably the most interesting run, and the place to start if you want to fiddle with the model.

Dueling Loops Paper

The most popular page on the site by a factor of 3. This paper presents a simple model showing why activists have been unable to solve the sustainability problem, and an alternative solution strategy based on high leverage points.

The Phenomenon of Change Resistance

This is the key concept that starts people thwinking, and causes them to explore the rest of the site. The concept is subtle, but has the potential to change the sustainability problem from insolvable to solvable.

The Powell Memo

The most eye popping short read (7 pages) on the site, if you have never heard about it. The memo was written in 1971.

Dueling Loops Videos

These average 8 minutes. They give a quick introduction to the Dueling Loops model and how it explains the tremendous change resistance to solving the sustainability problem.
